This is a song, but before that it was just words, but before that it was just letters in an alphabet waiting to be arranged. Now I feel insane or maybe possibly deranged for trying to place the blame on you, i'm still trying not to write a song about you. But every song I try to write has your name in the credits, don't be mad because I read it. I was left a little lacking. And everyone I meet has a little of you in them so I suppose I can believe them when they turn around and run for the hills. Я не опоздал, Я не опоздал. This is a chord, but before that it was just notes, but before that it was just another note by other men a million years ago. Now I feel like a dick for the chords that I borrow because they sound just like them. I'm still trying not to write a song like them. But every song I try to write has these guys as a reference, don't be mad it is my preference and it changes about once a week. And every song I sing has some Woody Guthrie in it, so I suppose I can believe it that he's spinning in his grave as we speak. Я не опоздал, Я не опоздал.

If I had a pair of shoes, I'd put them on and dance with you. If I had a parachute, I'd jump from soaring planes for you. I'd plummet from the sky, pull the ripcord hard and glide. See the ground beneath, bend my knees and kick my feet. If I had a parakeet I'd do my best to teach him to speak. I'd probably try to teach him your name if all the letters fit in his brain. One day he'd fly away, I already but that's ok. I'd be glad to see him go, help him open the big window. If I had a clue, I guess, I'd walk until I had to rest. Look down at my midnight heels and wonder if the dirt was real. I'd hate to hear your voice, clear and pure through all the noise. You sing the prettiest songs, one of these days I'll sing along. If I had a wife, you see, I'd try to love her because she'd love me. But if that wife wasn't you I know I'd have to tell the truth. I'd have to break her heart, hold her if she fell apart. Tell her it's not her fault, I made a mistake and that is all. If I had a pair of shoes, I'd put them on and dance with you. If I had a parachute, I'd jump from soaring planes for you. I'd plummet from the sky, pull the ripcord hard and glide. See the ground beneath, bend my knees and kick my feet.

We are driving westward cause we've run out of places to hide. Bullet in my shoulder and a woman by my side. We wouldn't be going to Memphis if I had anymore pride, but I am just a simple man and that's how I plan to die. I don't know if we're gonna freeze, I can't tell you if drunk heathens are gonna break all four of our knees. The money that we've made from this hasn't put my mind at ease. The pirates life is not the life for me. By now you've had enough coffee to turn your insides black, but you're still able to sleep in this boxcar, rattling up the tracks. We've got to learn to stop thinking about when we can go back. Pushing forward is easy when you've given up the slack. I don't know if we're gonna die, I can't tell you honestly if we'll make it out alive. The bullet picks its target, leaves the barrel then collides, and the dirt starts approaching on all sides. We are sleeping peacefully with the roots brushing our heads. If we never need no money then we wouldn't have ended up dead. Losing sight of the pale moonlight I swore that you had said, "We never needed no money, just a life to lead instead". I know that we're probably gonna rot, and in 20 years we'll be paved over when they put in a parking lot. Things could have been different if we stood behind and fought, at least that is the way that I've been taught.

Give me a juicebox and tell me I'm pretty and I will comply. Please keep me safe from this frivolous sinning or I will go blind, and I can't afford to lose my sight with all these pretty sights just out of sight. Give me employment and tell me it's crucial to our way of life. And if I learn how to question authority, tell me I'm right because authority's made up of people, just like you and I. And the man who taught me skepticism, is still just another guy. Give me a hat and the tugboat to match it and I will go sail. Hand on the mast and the wind up my ass, there is no way I'll fail because the ocean is made up of water, just like you and I. And the minute we all start thinking we're made of cola, is the day we'll all run dry.

Ain't it sad that the streetlights are brighter than the stars are tonight? And I suppose the orange glow is gonna keep the ghosts at bay, ok, and nothing ever changed. It's just a statement with integrity. Ain't it sad that the sirens are louder than the birds are today. I guess the wailing of the flatfoots mean the bad guy's gone away, ok, and nothing ever changed. It's just a statement with integrity. Why don't you let me sell you for nothing and keep all the profit, stow you away in these red empty pockets, keep you protected by three walls of cotton, maybe one day when you're lost and forgotten and I'm feeling down and your face looks just rotten, and you can't quite talk right because you are still sobbing, I'll look you right in the mouth and remind you that ain't it sad that the streetlights are brighter than the stars are tonight? And I suppose the orange glow is gonna keep the ghosts at bay, ok, and nothing ever changed. It's just a statement with integrity.

about

Sometimes, I play guitar. Less often, I play songs. Even less often I write songs, and least often of all I make recordings of them. These are those.
